Abstract

Song Variability and Singing Activity of the Red-breasted Flycatcher

Bird vocalization is one of the best-studied ways of animal communication. It can be strongly affected by various social and ecological factors, and thus can be highly variable. To study song variability at the inter-individual as well as population level, the Red-breasted Flycatcher (Ficedula parva) was chosen as a model species.

A field work was carried out in the Jeseníky Mountains in 2013-2016. Detailed acoustic monitoring resulted in subsequent analysis of more than 2,700 hours of recordings. Obtained data served to describe the diurnal and seasonal activity of recorded males. In addition, acquired high-quality recordings in combination with data from European ornithology portals were used to characterize the basic song features, to determine individual types of song and to analyze the effect of the male's age on the song characteristics. Finally, the geographical distribution of detected song types was evaluated.

The study shows different vocal activity during the day. Additionally, a comparison between songs produced in the morning and during the day revealed differences in the number of elements and the lowest frequency. This difference was most evident in the period after mating. The vocal activity also varies throughout the season and among particular males, depending particularly on the presence of a mate.

Overall, two kinds of songs, 14 different song types and two subtypes of the basic song were described. The effect of age on song performance was confirmed, as older males had considerably longer songs with a higher number of syllables. Although Red-breasted Flycatchers use many song types, no differences in geographical distribution of these song types have been found.

This is the first work describing the Red-breasted Flycatcher's vocalization in detail and will serve for further research. Results will help to specify monitoring methods, and will also contribute to the conservation of this endangered bird species.
